Hooked, Stitched & Colorful: Layers of Texture in Designs

Brazilian Artist Using Unique Texture Adding Technique for Locker Hooked Designs…

I recently discovered some amazing designs. Some artisan crafters are using layers and combining varied materials to create wonderfully textured, colorful designs.

The designs below are from Brazilian artisan crafter Sumara Ghizze Pio. She locker hooks panels and layers with stitches, felt pieces and beads to add texture. She says she uses materials that would otherwise be discarded–upcycling to create beautiful tote bags and wall art.

Want to create a similar look? Try locker hooking designs using a variety of materials… Cotton fabric strips, wool yarn, and silk strips for your base and yarn stitches for accents. For extra texture, cut or tear strips of woven fabrics like cotton voile, denim, linen, knits like t-shirt fabric or osnaburg. Layer additional accents with cut pieces of fabric and beads. Get creative with color and mix it up. For color inspiration, try Color Crazy’s Explore Color Collection–great packages of wonderful pre-cut fabric strips in surprising and fun color combinations.
